I guess that his humilty helps him being the pleasant person he is. If he started, as many other famous people do, from the point of view "I have many talents, I'm great and you have to worship me" he'd be impossible to bear. But he always starts from the "I can't win against anyone" so this is what makes him oblivious of his own talents, but they are very evident from outside. A good balance. At least this is my guess :)
