Personally I think this is good rather than being told that you're a person who practices this at home
No wait you got the sentence a bit off. He isn't absolutely talking about practicing fanservice or doing fanservice naturally. What he is saying is that he doesn't always do what he is requested and expected to do, on stage (by fans, and by his role as idol). To make an easy to understand example: the concerts where at the beginning he doesn't scream the name of the place "HEY OSAKA/TOKYO/SENDAI/etc", or the "dance~" call in Rescue/Come Here/etc songs, or the days when he doesn't ask the audience to sing for him one line of the song. He knows we like and expect it as a tradition, but if he doesn't want to do, he just won't. And this, as idol, isn't the ideal way of behaving on stage, because how he himself always says "an idol exist because he is requested by fans", so an idol who displeases his fans... what kind of idol is? XD Just imagine if he suddenly stopped doing the "Tch" pose in Real Face! XD This is what he meant with "I'm not sure this (=preparing the performance) is good as idol". I hope you now understand that passage better :) (that word in Japanese isn't impossible to translate) Actually imo he said it with a *laugh* at the end but he really meant it, because rationally it isn't such stupid retort. He is only lucky that he has a nice timing to make up for his whimsical moments... XD
