Why sad? Following your reasoning, shouldn't you be happy? It means he can - therefore that he isn't a mediocre actor, he can still surprise you. :)
Going on a tangent, there's a reason I sometimes pity Kame for being an idol, and many Maquias explain why: too much often "idol" equals "cage" or "prejudice". Sadly the roles that were entrusted to Kame are clearly made to be given to a Johnny's. Ryu, Shuji, Hiroto, Kyohei... as much as I love all of them, they're all roles that require the "cool" vibe. I think he isn't wrong when he says that he was required to be like that. It was the character, moreover Japanese audience doesn't expect an idol to act differently. And this is exactly why I'm grateful for this OreOre chance, he can finally give expression to his acting talent - and I think he has a lot of it: seeing him acting live is a sort of illumination. But until now no one thought of polishing his skills while making him free from that cage called "idol". Probably Miki is really the first one, as Kame himself says here.
Side note, just to be clear about my translation: he says that he was playing those characters "earnestly/seriously". I don't want to convey the wrong message ^^''' the fact he "cannot let go of himself" doesn't mean he was acting half-assed. He said he properly played the role, but left a small "Kamenashi" somewhere :) A sort of "where's Wally - Kamenashi version" lol xD
(Long reply~ but to sum up: I see your point and I partially agree, but don't read what he said as disappointing, just as he still hasn't shown you all he can do - and his real acting XD)
