He expressly wrote "girlfriend" in a sentence in which he wants to say that he doesn't force his feelings on people close to him (family, friends, girlfriend), but it's not that he says "My present girfriend". He might simple mean "my girlfriend, during the periods I have one". The fact he has a gf now or he's speaking of an abstract situation does not really influence the meaning of the sentence anyway ^^
